The Part Time Crunch

The crunch starts here. A little place for a partly crunchy mom to post some nonsense as well as making some sense.

DnD101: d20 System

on November 4, 2012

Ah, here we are, Saturday (okay, Sunday because its late).  I just joined my husband’s DnD game so I’m fresh off the chopping block of being awesome.  I decided to play a halfing bard who is chaotic neutral, but we’ll get into what all that means on another day.

I think the place place to start in learning Dungeons and Dragons is probably understanding the d20 system.  I’ll make it as simple as I can, but if you don’t understand please feel free to leave a comment below and I’ll answer. I’m trying to keep these posts short, sweet and too the point to make it as simple as possible which is why DnD101 will be a long standing series.

First off, a d20 system means its based off a 20 sided die. A 20 sided die (hence force known as d20) is number from 1-20 in each side. The d20 system means that all your actions are decided by that d20. Generally, rolling a 1 means you fail and rolling a 20 means you succeed in your action. All rolls aside, the dungeon master (game keeper, head honcho, etc) decides the difficulty of what you are rolling for.  Depending on what you’re rolling for, you’ll add something to your roll (but this will be on another day).

Okay, so pretty simple right? To decided what’s going to happen, you roll a d20. YOur number will tell the DM what you do, or don’t do.

The rest of the dice, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4, and the percentage die all are generally used for attack damage when used in a d20 system.

Now, you might be thinking, “Well, if the DM decides if I hit or miss, what’s the point in rolling?” What’s the point in playing if the DM deciding every tiny thing, he might as well play by himself then. This way, you have input in the story line as well and its more fun to mess up the plans the DM has made. 😉 So, yes, the DM has final say in everything but even his rules come from the Dungeon Master’s Guide from Wizards of the Coast.

Understand? Make any sense? Any questions class?!
