The Part Time Crunch

The crunch starts here. A little place for a partly crunchy mom to post some nonsense as well as making some sense.

Someone needs your help!

on November 1, 2012

Okay, to a totally serious topic for a moment.

I was approached by a friend of mine to do her a favor.  I wasn’t sure what she was going to ask me, but in general I usually say yes when my friends ask me for help.  I wasn’t expecting what she was going to ask me at all.  She said, “Spread the word” and gave me a link to a website.  At first I thought it was just some petition until I read the link.  It was the link for the Be the Match registry. Huh. Join, and share the word.

Of course, I said yes. And informed her I’d share the story of why on my blog.  But not before I signed up for the Be The Match registry, which was free and painless..just like advertised. It took me less than 15 minutes to do it and done.  I’d like to share the story as to why I joined, and leave the option up to to join as well.

This is the story of Samantha Payne:

I’ve never been one who cared much for Birthdays. Then two years ago I was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer and suddenly the question of how many more birthdays I’d be around for came into serious question. Statistics show the average survival time of people with this diagnosis is 18 months. So turning 28 this month, nearly two years after my diagnosis, with no signs I’ll be on my way out anytime soon is definitely a reason to celebrate.

When you’re sick people often ask if there is anything they can do to help but in reality there often isn’t. But for some people there is. Every 4 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and the only chance of a cure is a bone marrow transplant. At any given time there are around 6000 people a day waiting on a bone marrow donor. 70% of people in need of a bone marrow transplant have no available family donor and wait and hope for a match from a stranger, yet only 2% of Americans are registered on the bone marrow donor registry. That leaves thousands suffering, waiting in limbo and dying. Thousands of broken hearts, grief stricken parents and grieving families. Every 4 minutes it could be your friend, your spouse, your child or you.

This year I’m asking that in honor of my birthday you help me celebrate my latest trip around the sun by signing up on the Be the Match registry. It takes less then 15 minutes, it’s free and no blood required! After you sign up they’ll send you a kit to swab your cheek, you mail it back and you’re done. If you get called to donate you incur NO costs at all and the procedure is painless despite popular beliefs.

To sign up for the registry you must be between the ages of 18-44 and be in overall general good health (even if you have a chronic illness you may still be eligible to register, you can contact Be the Match for more information).

I’m asking that you not only sign up, but you encourage your friends and family to sign up as well. I’m hoping between now and November 30th we can get 100 people signed up. That’s 100 potentials to save a life!

There are a few people in my lives that have been diagnosed with cancer, breast specifically, and have beaten it.  There is no known 100% cure, but if you can give someone a chance..will you do it?

So, what do you think? Will you join? Donate marrow, or even some money?  Whatever you do, let’s help Stephanie meet her goal and surpass it.  If you join, leave a comment here so we can let her know!
